Environment ministry releases draft of NCAP

The Environment Ministry came out with a draft national action plan proposing multiple strategies to reduce air pollution.

Objective of NCAP:

  • is to augment and evolve an effective and a proficient ambient air quality monitoring network across the country to ensure comprehensive and reliable database.
  • to have efficient data dissemination and a public outreach mechanism for timely measures for prevention and mitigation of air pollution
  • having a feasible management plan for prevention, control and abatement of air pollution.

These include augmenting the air quality monitoring network, identification of alternative technology for real-time monitoring, setting up of 10 city super network, indoor air pollution monitoring and management and air pollution health impact studies.

Other measures include air quality forecasting system, issuance of notification on dust management, a three-tier mechanism for review, assessment and inspection for implementation and a national emission inventory.

Bihar has higher rate of Crime against SC/ST; Bengal lowest

Bihar reports the highest rate of crimes against Schedule Caste/Schedule Tribe population, while West Bengal reports the lowest, according to latest data released by National Crime Records Bureau. For crimes against SCs specifically, Madhya Pradesh is highest at 43.4 percent, and West Bengal is lowest at 6 percent. For crimes against the ST population specifically, Rajasthan is the highest at 12.9 percent, with West Bengal being the lowest at 1.6 percent.

The police play a crucial role in ensuring that SC/ST populations are protected under The Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. They are responsible for ensuring that a charge-sheet is filed once a case is reported, and that all cases are then investigated and forwarded to the hearing stage.

Gujarat Narmada Valley Fertilizers & Chemicals Limited (GNFC’s) Neem Project

State-run Gujarat Narmada Valley Fertilizers & Chemicals Limited (GNFC) started its socio-economic Neem Project, inaugurated by Union Minister Smriti Irani Kathaura – Jagdishpur in Amethi District recently

GNFC intends to collect 8,000 to 10,000 MT Neem seeds from the State. It is estimated to provide additional income of Rs 12-15 crore for over one lakh rural woman from 2,500 villages in the State.

Using Neem as a key ingredient, GNFC has started producing Neem oil-based products such as Neem soap, handwash, shampoo, hair oil, facewsah, Neem mosquito repellent, Neem pesticide & Neem organic manure.


Neem project will be implemented in around 15 districts of Uttar Pradesh including Allahabad, Pratapgarh, Sultanpur, Sitapur, Lakhimpur, kheri, Jhansi, Hardoi, Barabanki, Farrukhabad & Raebareli, Kaushambi, Amethi, Raebareli, Ambedkar Nagar among others.

235 districts to be covered in Phase-II of POSHAN Abhiyaan

The government will cover 235 districts in the second phase of its POSHAN Abhiyaan which aims to reduce stunting, under-nutrition, anemia among children, women and adolescent girls along with reducing low birth weight in the country.

Regarding the direct transfer of funds to states and UTs to frontline functionaries, a pilot would be conducted in 10 districts for conditional cash transfer (CCT) through direct benefit transfer and the states/UTs would continue their existing system of providing supplementary nutrition under anganwadi services.

POSHAN Abhiyaan was launched on March 8 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Jhunjhunu. The initiative targets to reduce stunting, under-nutrition, anemia (among young children, women and adolescent girls) and reduce low birth weight by 2 per cent, 2 per cent, 3 per cent and 2 per cent per annum respectively.

The target of the mission was to bring down stunting among children in the age group 0-6 years from 38.4 to 25 per cent by 2022.

Six more states to roll out intra-State e-way bills from April 20

E-way bills will be mandatory for intra-State trade in respect of six more states from April 20. These six states are Bihar, Jharkhand, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Tripura and Uttarakhand.

It may be recalled that e-way Bill system for intra-state movement of goods was implemented from April 15 in five states. The five states were Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Kerala, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh.

Karnataka is already implementing e-way Bill system for intra-state trade.

India ranked 10th in Innovation Index

  • India was ranked 10th on a new Commonwealth Innovation Index which was topped by UK, Singapore & Canada.
  • The index has been created in partnership with United Nations World Intellectual Property Organisation & its annual Global Innovation Index.
  • It is aimed at providing a tool that allows member states, organisations & citizens to benchmark themselves against 53 countries of Commonwealth.

India wins six elections to UN Economic and Social Council bodies

India has won six elections to UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) bodies, five of them unanimously. In the polls held on Monday, India won places on the executive boards of four UN bodies, three commissions and a committee.

Flipkart Tie up with ASUS

As part of the ‘Mobiles 40by20’ strategy, e-commerce major Flipkart today has formed a long-term strategic partnership with Taiwanese handset maker, Asus. The first smartphone under this partnership - ZenFone Max Pro - will be launched on April 23.

Amazon launches international shopping from US

Amazon.com Inc has launched an international shopping feature that will enable customers across the world to shop more than 45 million items that can be shipped to their country from the United States.

The international shopping feature, which is available on a mobile browser and the mobile app for both iOS and Android devices, has been extended to users to purchase products outside their home markets and is available in five languages, including Spanish, English, simplified Chinese, Brazilian Portuguese and German.

It will allow customers to shop in 25 currencies, with more languages and currencies to be added in 2018.

Indian scientists make Ayurvedic drug to cure dengue

Indian scientists have formulated an Ayurvedic drug to cure dengue, claimed to be the first in the world, and the medicine is likely to be available in the market by next year.

This drug has been made with seven herbal ingredients which are in use in Ayurveda system of medicine since centuries

Dengue is caused by the aedes aegypti mosquito which breeds in clean water. The symptoms of dengue include high fever, joint pains, headache, nausea, vomiting, dip in blood pressure along with a characteristic skin rash.

According to WHO, dengue is the fastest growing mosquito-borne disease across the world today, causing nearly 400 million infections every year. India in 2017 has seen 15, 7220 cases of dengue and 250 deaths due to the disease (till December 24), as per the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) data. In 2016, the country registered 129166 cases and 245 deaths.

World Heritage Day - 18 April

April 18 is International Day For Monuments and Sites, also called World Heritage Day. As of 2018, India alone has 36 world heritage sites, the sixth most of any country. Italy leads with 53 sites followed by China with 52 sites.

GOI lauches DARPAN PLI App

Minister of State(Independent Charges) for Communication Manoj Sinha has launched DARPAN-Postal Life Insurance App, in New Delhi.

  • It will help in collection of premium for Postal Life Insurance and Rural Postal Life Insurance policies at Branch Post Offices anywhere in India, with online updation of the policies.
  • Department of Posts has launched Digital Advancement of Rural Post Office for a New India (DARPAN) Project.
  • The project aims at connecting all 1.29 lakh Rural Branch Post Offices in the country to enable them to do online Postal and Financial Transactions.
  • The Hand-held devices are installed under DARPAN Project SIM connectivity and solar power backup at all Branch Post Offices.
  • It will ensure improvement in the quality of Postal services being offered in remote rural areas.
  • Postal Life Insurance is the oldest Life Insurance in the country.
  • Rural Postal Life Insurance, in fact, is meant for anyone who has a rural address, for instance rural migrant workers.
