Akshay Kumar Launches Twin Pit Toilet Technology Campaign

Film actor Akshay Kumar launched the twin pit toilet technology campaign in New Delhi. The actor appealed everybody to spread the awareness on the issue and make the cleanliness drive more effective.

The twin pit toilet technology is an Indian invention that collects defecation for a period of five years and then it turns into a valuable organic compost.

Prime Minister of Netherlands launched ‘Clean Air India Initiative’

  • Prime Minister of Netherlands Mark Rutte launched the ‘Clean Air India Initiative’ in Delhi.
  • The campaign aims to curb air pollution in Indian cities by promoting partnerships between Indian start-ups and Dutch companies.
  • The Clean Air India Initiative is a project between Get In The Ring, a platform for start-ups, the Government of the Netherlands, Start-up India, and INDUS Forum

Gaj Yatra launched in Garo Hills of Meghalaya

Meghalaya’s Home Minister James P K Sangma on May 29, 2018 flagged off the Gaj Yatra in Garo Hills of Meghalaya with an aim to raise awareness about the shrinking space for wild elephants in the country and particularly in the state.

  • The Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change and the Wildlife Trust of India rolled out the ‘Gaj Yatra’ from Tura, Meghalaya.
  • It aims to raise awareness about the shrinking space for India’s wild elephants & the importance of securing elephant corridors.
  • The event involves taking an elephant mascot across districts frequented by jumbo herds for generating awareness among the people.

Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani launches ‘Reuse of Treated Waste Water Policy’

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani today released the ‘Reuse of Treated Waste Water Policy’ at a high-level meeting at Gandhinagar

Explaining the details of the policy, the state government planned to create water-grid, on the lines of power-grid, for reuse of the treated waste water from urban areas. The plan is to set up set up sewage treatment plant in each and every municipal corporation and over 150 municipalities. The plan is to fulfil 50 per cent requirement of water from retreated water in collaboration with the state’s industrial units, because the bulk of the retreated waste water is to be used by the industries


Ireland ends abortion ban

  • Ireland voted decisively to repeal one of the world’s more restrictive abortion bans.
  • In Ireland’s historic referendum on its strict abortion laws 66% backed repealing the constitutional ban on terminations.
  • Voters were asked if they wish to scrap the eighth amendment to the constitution, which gives an unborn child and its mother equal rights to life.
  • No social issue has divided Ireland's 4.8 million people as sharply as abortion.
  • It was pushed up the political agenda by the death in 2012 of a 31-year-old Indian immigrant from a septic miscarriage after she was refused a termination.

India Netherlands relations

  • Prime Minister of Netherlands inaugurated the Indo-Dutch Ganga Forum to take forward the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation and the Ministry of Infrastructure & Environment of the Netherlands.
  • The Netherlands has become the 64th signatory member of the International Solar Alliance.
  • Prime Minster of India noted that the first Indo-Dutch Centre of Excellence CoE in Vegetables had started in Baramati, Maharashtra.
  • The Netherlands government also shared the experiences of their collaboration with Uttar Pradesh government to reduce water consumption and employ cleaner technologies in tanneries in Kanpur.
  • According to data for 2016-17, the Netherlands was the fifth largest foreign investor in India.
  • In February 2016, a branch of the Netherlands-India Chamber of Commerce and Trade (NICCT) was established in Mumbai

Hamburg to host 2018 Global Wind Summit

The first edition of the Global Wind Summit will be held here from September 25-28, 2018.

The organisers of the four-day event are expecting speakers from about 100 countries, including India, China, the US, Spain and Denmark.

The conference on wind is the largest and most important meeting of the wind industry worldwide. The event combines two conferences, WindEnergy Hamburg and WindEurope, Holinsky said, adding both the events together will witness about 1,400 exhibitors and 250 speakers from all over the world.

The event will provide a platform for experts from across the globe to discuss innovative and green technologies for harnessing wind energy making, according to S Gnanasekharan, Secretary General, Indian Wind Power Association.

He(S Gnanasekharan) also said that'The focus of the conferences would be on three major subjects. Dynamic markets, cost efficiency and smart energy. How to develop new markets, make product competitive in auctions and use wind power for all energy applications (will be discussed)'

India, Russia conclude negotiations for S-400

  • India has concluded price negotiations with Russia for a nearly Rs 40,000 crore deal to procure S-400 Triumf air defence missile systems for the Indian Air Force.
  • S-400 Triumf can detect, track & shoot down multiple targets including cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, aircraft, drones & UAVs.
  • S-400 is Russia’s most advanced long-range surface-to-air missile defence system.


Sangeeta Bahl Becomes Oldest Indian woman to Scale Mount Everest

  • Sangeeta Bahl, a 53-year-old former model and entrepreneur from Jammu and Kashmir, has become the oldest Indian woman to conquer Mount Everest.
  • She scaled the peak on May 19 with the help of two Sherpas. Her husband Ankur Bahl, who climbed Mt Everest in 2016, was also welcomed at the Indian embassy in Kathmandu.
  • She broke the record of Premlata Agarwal, 48, who scaled Everest on May 20, 2011
  • Shivangi Pathak, 16, from Haryana became India’s youngest woman to climb the Everest from Nepali side.

IPL:2018 - Chennai Superkings made it 3rd time.

It has been the season full of ups and downs for the 11th edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018. Chennai Super Kings beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 8 wickets in the final of the 2018 Indian Premier League at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

  • Chennai Super Kings lifted their third Indian Premier League title after defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad by eight wickets in Mumbai.
  • Shane Watson’s century helped Chennai to defeat Hyderabad.
  • Shane Watson was declared as Man of the Match.


Pankaj Saran appointed Deputy NSA

  • India’s envoy to Russia Pankaj Saran has been appointed as the Deputy National Security Advisor.
  • Mr Saran is currently India's Ambassador to Russia.
  • He served twice in the Prime Minister’s Office – First as Deputy Secretary during 1995 and 1999, and then as the Joint Secretary between 2007 and 2012.
  • He had held various positions in India & abroad including country’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh.
  • Ajit Doval is the National Security Adviser

R K Agrawal appointed NCDRC president

Justice R K Agrawal, who retired as Supreme Court judge earlier this month, was appointed the president of the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC).

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved Justice (retd.) Agrawal's appointment as the president of the commission, an order issued by the Personnel Ministry said, without giving details about his tenure.

The NCDRC, a quasi-judicial authority, was set up in 1988 to decides on consumers' complaints. Anybody aggrieved over goods and services, for values over Rs one crore, can approach the commission for grievance redressal.


Unique telescope link

  • Scientists in South Africa on Friday launched the world’s first optical telescope linked to a radio telescope, combining “eyes and ears” to try to unravel the secrets of the universe.
  • The device forms part of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project in the remote Karoo desert, which will be the world’s most powerful radio telescope system.
  • The latest move combines the new optical telescope MeerLITCH — Dutch for ‘more light’ — with the recently-completed 64-dish MeerKAT radio telescope, located 200 kilometres away.
  • The project has been six years in the making by a joint-team of South African, Dutch and British scientists.
  • Among the priorities for MeerLICHT, which cost about $1.1 million, is the study of black holes, neutron stars and stellar explosions.
  • The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is a large multi radio telescope project aimed to be built in Australia and South Africa.

Eastern Peripheral Expressway

  • The Prime Minister inaugurated the two expressways in the Delhi NCR Region- Phase-I of the Delhi-Meerut Expressway and Eastern Peripheral Expressway.
  • The Eastern Peripheral Expressway (EPE) will contribute towards the twin objectives of decongesting and de-polluting the national capital by diverting traffic not destined for Delhi.
  • It is expected to reduce pollution levels in the national capital by 50 percent.
  • The 135-km Eastern Peripheral Expressway envisages signal-free connectivity between Ghaziabad, Greater Noida, Faridabad and Palwal.
  • It is the country's first highway lit by solar power with provisions of rain water harvesting.
  • For the first time, entry points at an expressway have 'weigh-in-motion' sensors to keep a check on overloading in trucks.
  • Nearly 2.5 lakh trees have been planted along the highway on both sides.
