MHA launches online security clearance for visas to attend conferences

Union home ministry recently lauched online "event clearance system" for grant of security clearance to foreigners wanting to visit India to attend conferences, seminars or workshops.

This will enable the Indian missions abroad to issue conference visa to foreign nationals or delegates intending to attend such events organized by central and state governments, public sector undertakings, central educational institutions, public funded universities, private institutions or NGOs, said an official release issued by the ministry of home affairs.

The fourth regional conference on futuristic, resilient and digital infrastructure began in Bengaluru on May 3, 2018.

The conference is being organised by the Union Ministry of Finance in collaboration with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS).

'Vibrant North East 2018' Held in Guwahati

i. The ‘Vibrant North East 2018', an event in which people would be made aware of central government’s schemes and programmes, was held in Guwahati, Assam.
ii. The event is organised by Delhi-based NGO, Centre for Agriculture and Rural Development (CARD). The main purpose of the event is to disseminate information about the schemes, grants and projects of the Central Government to ensure that they are implemented as envisaged officially.


India slips to 11th spot in AT Kearney FDI Confidence Index 2018

Global consultant AT Kearney on May 3, 2018 released the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Confidence Index 2018, an annual survey which tracks the impact of political, economic and regulatory changes on the FDI preferences of Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) and Chief Financial Officers (CFOs) of the country.

The index ranked India at 11th spot, three places down from the previous year. In the year 2017, India was ranked 8th. It is the first time since 2015 that India has been pushed out of the top 10.

  • Japan, the US, the UK and Singapore consistently serve as large sources of FDI for India.
  • The United States topped the index for the sixth year in a row.
  • Switzerland and Italy entered the top 10 for the first time in more than a decade, pushing out India and Singapore to 11th and 12th spots, respectively.

    India has emerged as one of the five biggest military spenders in 2017, a report by Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) found.

    According to the arms watchdog, the five top military spenders in 2017 were the US, China, Saudi Arabia, Russia and India.

    IAAF shakes up 2019 Doha worlds schedule

    The IAAF will scrap morning sessions at the 2019 World Athletics Championships in Doha.

    A mixed 4x400 metres relay and a midnight marathon will also be introduced. Race walking events will also start at 11.30 pm local time as part of a big shake-up of the traditional scheduling for the championships.

    This will be the first for the world championships. Their respective event-ending 1500m and 800m finals will both start after midnight.


    Kidambi Srikanth became Deputy Collector in AP

    • Indian shuttler Kidambi Srikanth formally took charge as the Deputy Collector of Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, his native town.
    • In June 2017, Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu had offered Srikanth a Group 1 officer post after he won the Indonesian and Australian Open titles.
    • Recently, Srikanth bagged his maiden singles’ silver medal at Commonwealth Games.

    AK Mittal to be acting CJ of Punjab & Haryana

    • Justice AK Mittal has been appointed as the acting Chief Justice of Punjab & Haryana High Court, Chandigarh.
    • Appointment of Justice Mittal, who is the first puisne Judge of the HC, has been notified by centre because of the retirement of CJ Vazifdar.
    • Collegium had recommended the appointment of Justice Krishna Murari as the CJ of High Court but the Centre did not act on this recommendation.

    Ashok Lahiri appointed full-time member

    • Former Chief Economic Adviser Ashok Lahiri has been appointed as full-time member of the 15th Finance Commission.
    • He is at present the part-time member of the commission, headed by N.K. Singh.
    • He will be accorded the status of the Minister of State.
    • The 15th finance commission’s chairman is N. K. Singh, with its full-time members being Shaktikanta Das and Anoop Singh.
    • The data from NASA’s Galileo spacecraft shows that the Jupiter’s moon Ganymede has a magnetic field unlike any other.
    • Ganymede is a unique solar-system body because it's the only moon with an internally generated magnetosphere.
    • This magnetic-field region surrounds Ganymede like a bubble and shelters it from cosmic radiation.
    • Just like on Earth, the magnetosphere causes auroras near this moon's poles.
    • Galileo mission was the first to enter orbit around the planet.
    • Galileo data allowed the creation of the first detailed maps of Jupiter’s major moons.
