India improves its childhood index global ranking

India has improved its ranking in the world childhood index but stays at a poor 113th position -- up from 116 in 2017 -- in the list of 175 countries indexed by global child rights group, Save the Children.

The report, titled "End of Childhood", released commends India's achievements in reducing the rate of child marriages which it said was a major factor contributing to an improved score in the index.

Another challenge the report mentioned is that of adolescent pregnancy. In India, the number of births per 1000 girls aged 15-19 is 23.3 per cent, which means one out of four girls are more likely to give birth before reaching 20.

MHA launches 'Online Analytical Tool'

In bid to keep a close eye on overseas donations to NGOs in India, which is regulated as per the provisions of the the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Friday launched an “Online Analytical Tool” to analyse in real time the source, destination and the actual usage of the fund.

What is Online Analytical Tool?

The web-based tool, which was launched by Union Home Minister, will enable decision-makers in various departments of the government “to scrutinise source of foreign funds and their actual use in India

It gives them capacity to take data-driven and evidence-based decisions regarding the compliance of the provisions of the FCRA, 2010. It has analytical features to conduct big data mining and data exploration. Its dashboard will be integrated with the bank accounts of the FCRA-registered entities through the Public Financial Management System for updating transactional data on a real-time basis

Haryana to get one-stop centres for women affected by violence

All districts of Haryana will soon get One Stop Centres (OSCs) to facilitate integrated services for women affected by violence.

An official of Women and Child Development Department said that at present seven OSCs are functional in as many districts and now Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has accorded approval for the setting up of 15 more centres in the rest other districts.

The seven districts which already have the facility are Karnal, Bhiwani, Gurugram, Faridabad, Hisar, Rewari and Narnaul.

One stop centre is completely centrally sponsored scheme under the Nirbhaya Fund.

India successfully test-fires SFDR propulsion based missile

In a major breakthrough in missile technology, India successfully carried out the first test of a new surface-to-air missile with nozzle less booster making its mark as a military superpower in South East Asia region

ndigenously designed and developed by the country’s premier research agency - Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the fastest missile in its class is capable of neutralising fast moving aerial targets.

The technology demonstrator flight test was conducted from the Launch Centre-III of Integrated Test Range at Chandipur in Odisha.

  • The flight test met all the mission objectives. The technology of nozzle less booster has been successfully demonstrated in the mission for the first time in the country.
  • Kerala cartoonist wins international award in the best caricature category

    Kerala cartoonist Thomas Antony has won an international award, in the best caricature category.

    Antony, currently working as Executive Artist of Malayalam daily 'Metro Vaartha', is among the nine winners at the 13th edition of the World Press Cartoon awards, instituted by an organisation based in Lisbon, Portugal.

    Intra-State e-waybills to take effect in final 8 States

    The e-waybill system for intra-State movement of goods will be implemented for the final eight States over the first three days of June.

    The new system would be implemented for intra-State transport in Chhattisgarh, Goa, Jammu & Kashmir, Mizoram, Odisha, and Punjab on June 1, in Tamil Nadu on June 2 and in West Bengal, on June 3.

    Govt approves construction of 1.5 lakh houses for urban poor

    The Centre has approved construction of 1.5 lakh houses for urban poor under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban), taking to 47.52 lakh the tally of houses under the programme so far.

    The latest approval entails an investment of Rs 7,227 crore with central assistance of Rs 2,209 crore.

    Andhra Pradesh was sanctioned 56,512 houses, while Uttar Pradesh got 23,060, Madhya Pradesh 17,920, Jharkhand 14,526 and Maharashtra 13,506 houses.

    With the latest approval for construction of affordable houses, the cumulative figure under under PMAY(U) has reached 47.52 lakh houses.


    PM Modi Launches 3 Indian Digital Payment Apps In Singapore

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched three Indian mobile payment apps in Singapore at a business event aimed at internationalisation of the country's digital payment platform.

    At the 'Business, Innovation and Community Event' where digital platform was the main feature, PM Modi launched India's BHIM, RuPay and SBI app.

    India's RuPay digital payments system was linked up with Singapore's 33-year old Network for Electronic Transfers (NETS).

    SBI has six branches in Singapore as well as Auto Teller Machines (ATMs).

    India, Singapore announce 14 B2B, B2G agreements

    India and Singapore announced 14 business-to-business and business-to-government agreements during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit of Singapur.

    The agreements include:

    on supporting India's innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem and promoting Indian innovation abroad, to set up Indian institutes of skills on waste water management and recycling, on promotion of 'Make-in-India' in Singapore and ASEAN, and commercial collaboration in the space sector and development of Singapore's space industry, among others.


    India fastest growing economy! GDP expands at 7.7% in Q4, 6.7% in full year

    The Indian economy seems to have started on the road to recovery as it reclaimed the position of the fastest growing economy. According to data released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

    India's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 7.7 per cent in the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2017-18. Courtesy to the rise in the GDP growth during three months of March, India surpassed China's GDP growth of 6.8 per cent reported for the quarter ended March.

    The overall GDP growth seen by the Indian economy during the financial year that ended on March 31, 2018, stood at 6.7 per cent, according to the government data. The Indian economy had posted the GDP growth of 7.1 per cent for the previous financial year.


    Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES)

    • The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) is an independent intergovernmental body.
    • It was established by member States in 2012.
    • It provides policymakers with objective scientific assessments about the state of knowledge regarding the planet’s biodiversity, ecosystems and the benefits they provide to people, as well as the tools and methods to protect and sustainably use these vital natural assets.
    • Its mission is to strengthen knowledge foundations for better policy through science, for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, long-term human well-being and sustainable development.
    • To some extent IPBES does for biodiversity what the IPCC does for climate change.
    • India is a member of the IPBES.
