President "One District, one Product"

President Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated the ‘One District One Product’ Summit in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.

The ‘One District One Product’ (ODOP) scheme aims to promote one traditional industry in every district such as lock industry in Aligarh, Banarasi silk-weaving in Varanasi and biscuit-making in Amethi.

  • The summit, which aims to give boost to micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME), is a consequence of the UP Investors Summit held in UP in February 2018.
  • During the summit, with a tagline of 'Nayi Udaan, Nayi Pehchan', the President distributed loan sanction papers to some artisans.
  • Under the ‘One District One Product’ scheme, the Uttar Pradesh government has set a goal of providing employment to 25 lakh people in five years through the financial assistance of Rs 25000 crores.

  • Global Innovation Index, GII- 2018 Launched In India

    The Global Innovation Index 2018 was launched in New Delhi by Ratan P Watal, Principal Adviser, NITI Aayog & Member Secretary of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister.The event was organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) – one of the founding partners of GII along with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), in collaboration with the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP).

    India’s rank on the Global Innovation Index (GII) has improved from 60 in 2017 to 57 in 2018. India has been consistently climbing the GII ranking for the past two years.

    Neeraj Chopra to be India’s flag-bearer at Asian Games opening ceremony

    Javelin thrower star Neeraj Chopra will be India’s flag bearer in the opening ceremony of the upcoming Asian Games 2018. Chopra, who won the gold medal in Commonwealth Games 2018 event in Gold Coast earlier this year, will lead India’s contingent in the multi-sport event. The announcement was made by Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president Narinder Batra on Friday during the send-off ceremony organised for the Indian contingent.

    Chopra also holds the for U-20 world record with a throw of 86.48m. Neeraj had won the gold medal in the Asian Athletic championships in 2017 with a throw of 85.23 meters. He had also bagged a gold in the 2016 IAAF World U-20 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland.

    Parliament passes Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (Second Amendment) Bill, 2018

    The Rajya Sabha passed the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (Second Amendment) Bill, 2018. The bill was passed in Lok Sabha.

    The Bill seeks to replace the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (Amendment) Ordinance 2018. It will now go to the President for his assent.

  • The Bill amends the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016 to clarify that allottees under a real estate project should be treated as financial creditors.
  • The voting threshold for routine decisions taken by the committee of creditors has been reduced from 75 percent to 51 percent. For certain key decisions, this threshold has been reduced to 66 percent.
  • The Bill allows the withdrawal of a resolution application submitted to the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) under the Code. This decision can be taken with the approval of 90 percent of the committee of creditors.
  • Section 29(A) of the IBC, 2016 has been amended to exempt pure play financial entities from being disqualified on account of non-performing assets (NPA).
  • Taking into account the wide range of disqualifications contained in Section 29(A) of the Code, the Ordinance provides that the Resolution Applicant shall submit an affidavit certifying its eligibility to bid.
  • Haryana Government to launch Ayushman Bharat scheme on Aug 15

    The state government of Haryana has announced that it will be launching the Ayushman Bharat-Haryana Health Protection Mission on August 15, 2018.

    The scheme aims to provide cashless healthcare facilities to beneficiaries at empanelled hospitals. The scheme would be initially implemented on a pilot basis in one government hospital in each of the 22 districts, one ESI hospital and one medical college.

  • Under the scheme, families identified by the Socio-Economic and Caste Census (SECC) would be provided with coverage of Rs 5 lakh.
  • Every family figuring in the defined SECC 2011 database would be entitled to claim benefits under the scheme.
  • Besides, all hospitals in Haryana have been directed to stock up on medicines so that patients don’t have to purchase them from outside.
  • A total of 15.50 lakh families, including 9, 25,014 in rural and 6, 26,761 in urban areas, which figure in the SECC-2011 database, would be entitled to claim the benefits.
  • DNA Technology Regulation Bill 2018

    The DNA Technology (Use and Application) Regulation Bill, 2018 has been introduced in the Parliament, with a view to creating a national DNA database for solving crimes and identifying missing persons.

    • The purpose of the bill is to expand the application of DNA-based forensic technologies to support and strengthen the justice delivery system of the country.
    • By providing for the mandatory accreditation and regulation of DNA laboratories, the Bill seeks to ensure that the DNA test results are reliable and the data remain protected from misuse or abuse in terms of the privacy rights of our citizens.
    • Bill’s provisions will enable the cross-matching between persons who have been reported missing on the one hand and unidentified dead bodies found in various parts of the country on the other, and also for establishing the identity of victims in mass disasters.
    • The Bill includes provisions for the destruction of DNA samples and removal of innocent people’s DNA profiles from the database.

    World Biofuel Day: 10 August 2018

    The World Bio-Fuel Day was observed across the world on August 10, 2018 with an aim to create awareness about non fossil-fuels (green fuels).

    On 10 August 1893, Sir Rudalph Diesel, inventor of the diesel engine, for the first time successfully ran mechanical engine with Peanut Oil. His research experiment had predicted that vegetable oil is going to replace the fossil fuels in the next century to fuel different mechanical engines. Thus, to mark this extraordinary achievement, World Bio-fuel Day is observed every year on 10 August.

    Fall Armyworm discovered in Kerala

    • Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR) has sounded the alarm after the invasive agricultural pest, Fall Armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda), was discovered in Karnataka.
    • Fall Armyworm is a major maize pest in North America, arrived in Africa in 2016. Since then, it has threatened the continent’s maize crop.

    • The Karnataka finding is the first report of the pest in Asia.
    • Scientists warn the insect could spread throughout Asia to become a major threat to global food security.
    • The discovery is more worrisome because the pest feeds on around 100 different crops, such as vegetables, rice, and sugarcane.
